Akadama

Akadama, also known as 赤玉土, akadamatsuchi, red ball earth, is a premium, naturally occurring clay-like mineral from Japan, prized for its balanced moisture retention, structure, and root-enhancing properties. When dry, it remains firm and porous with a light brown colour, but it softens slightly and turns to a dark brown colour when moist, making it an excellent indicator for watering and a favourite among bonsai growers, succulents, and other precision-grown plants. Akadama promotes excellent aeration while holding just enough moisture to support consistent hydration without waterlogging. Use it on its own for bonsai, lithops, or cacti, or mix it with lava rock, pumice, or charcoal to create a custom mineral-rich blend ideal for well-drained setups.
